LA WiFi?
So, now that I have my laptop, I'm looking for good places to get out and write. Both places that are closer to me than the Creative City Cafe that I recently checked out, as well as places in other parts of the city, should I find myself there. Preferably free (since I think Charbucks charges to use the WiFi in their stores).
So, do any of you know of good free places around LA? More importantly, I've found a couple of resources on the web that list these "hotspots," but firstly I don't know how accurate and up-to-date they are, and secondly I don't know if there are better sites out there. So, if anyone has a good web resource, it would be awesome. Maybe another of those cool Frappr! thingies? Or a different map mash-up? That would be cooler than just an alphabetical listing.
Thanks!

If you're on the westside, the Santa Monica Public library has free wifi...
Someone I know does his writing in front of a cafe on what I believe is the south side of Hollywood Blvd at LaBrea (if you want to be in that neighborhood, that is). I don't remember the name of it, but it's some JavaCafe, or Cyberjava or something like that. Actually, Cyberjava sounds right. And I think the wireless is free there. Either that, or my friend knows how to get it for free.
(Look at me! I know stuff!)
Well thanks to the anonymous commenter, I thought to call the Beverly Hills Public Library to check if they have it too. Thankfully, they do. It is much closer to me than SMPL, and I love going there because it is such a beautiful building!
But I'd still like to find a good web resource for other parts of the city, or more suggestions like dear Esther's. Thanks!
My boyfriend's apartment in Hollywood has free WiFi :-)
His neighbor doesn't realize he's broadcasting his ECID.
Most hotels have free WiFi - sit iin the lobby, the restaurant or get a room. The Beverly Garland in NoHo has big tables and a good chinese chicken salad.
There's also a funky coffee house called the Bourgeois Pig on Franklin Ave in Hollywood that has great atmosphere for writing but I'm not sure on their WiFi set-up.
I prefer my favorite starbucks (w/tmobile account) cause they don't care if I stay all day and I've met people here who have helped my career.

extensive, though not entirely comprehensive.
LA public libraries have it for free. the BH libr. is quite the lovely public space though.
as mentioned above, you can always bogart someone else's connection. a lot of debate on the ethics of this, though.
Karma Coffeehouse on Cahuenga and Selma...tell Mike I said "Hi!"
FYI -- I'm at the BHPL right now, and it is working great! And of course a beautiful and peaceful spot to work, with plenty of available tables and outlets! :-)
IndWhore -- yeah, I heard about The Office about a year ago, but hadn't checked it out, due to a lack of laptop. Now that I have one, I may check it out one of these days. Thanks!
there's a chain of places called Panera all over the place and they have free wi-fi, comfy booths and decent food. i highly recommend.

Hi again Joel...great seeing you at dinner. That "Bourgeois Pig" place is down the street, but so is a great funky coffeehouse called Psychobabble. It's definitely not near you. But if you can get over this way, I'd totally walk down and work while you work and sip a cup of joe. I have so much grading to do so I'd be down. Tons of writer types go there :) It's on Vermont, between Franklin and Hollywood. If you can get to the subway, it's about a mile walk from the Western/Hollywood stop, or about the same (maybe a little less) from the Vermont/Sunset stop.
Let me know if you try it out. My apartment has free signal too...but I'd be afraid you were stalking me if you started hanging out in my stairwell.
These are great leads, thanks. Does anybody know where the best places to park are near Bourgeouis Pig/Psychobabble? All of Hollywood is such a pain in the arse for parking.
For those of you looking for free WiFi, WiFi at the Bourgeois Pig costs $$$.
It's still a nice place, but plan to pay about $6.95 for the WiFi.
